When we think about our health and safety at work, we often think about how to be mindful of electrical appliances, how not to trip over or to be aware of the nearest fire exits at any given point etc etc. And whilst these are important and relevant safety aspects to consider, we also have to be prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to emergency situations that could pose a different sort of threat.

What would be your first response if you took a call at work from somebody who tells you they have planted a bomb… and it’s in your building. In fact, it might not even be a call, it could be on social media, via email or even through the post. Or let’s say you see a suspicious item lying around. Or perhaps there is a medical emergency? Have you thought about how you would react, and then what do you do immediately after that? Who do you contact? What process do you follow?

It’s okay if you’ve never thought this through before. It’s not common to receive bomb threats at work, see questionable packages lying around or have to deal with a medical emergency. But these things do happen, and you should know how to respond. If you don’t, you should ask your manager what your company policy is. Maybe you are the manager, in which case, are your staff aware of how to deal with these situations?

Of course there is no one right way to handle events, but it is important to equip yourself with a best practice framework so you can be prepared for all eventualities.
