Walkgrove created a suite of helpful modules for staff involved in managing student accommodation that would equip them to achieve best practice sector standards.

The training need

Universities UK (UUK), on behalf of the UUK/GuildHE Accommodation Code of Practice Governance Board, required online training that would support consistent and rigorous application of the Student Accommodation Code of Practice. The Code assists those in charge of managed university student accommodation to achieve good standards and improve the quality of their housing.

Walkgrove won the work to help increase the understanding of the Code’s requirements within the staff body of over 150 member higher education institutions. E-learning modules needed to demonstrate the importance of compliance with the Code and the wide benefits it would bring. The target audience of learners was diverse in background, education and seniority, with job roles ranging from domestic support, estates staff, workers in accommodation offices and higher management. Walkgrove also provided a multi-tenancy, branded installation of Svelte, their light LMS for deployment and data collection purposes.

Our bespoke e-learning solution

Walkgrove created six, compact custom e-learning modules to explain the Code of Practice. A 45-minute introductory module was designed to meet the fundamental learning needs of the wide target audience and covered the purpose, scope and key benefits of the Code. Five discrete 25-minute modules focused on different Code provisions relating to student accommodation management including wellbeing, fire safety and environmental quality. This modular design makes it easy for course administrators to assign different learning content to staff roles as relevant, ensuring the learning experience is concise and targeted.

To help the e-learning seem relevant to learners in a wide range of higher education settings, modules use real-life student housing photography from UUK member institutions. This is combined with an attractive line-drawn illustration style to represent universally recognisable scenes of student living. Photo case studies, realistic examples and interactive challenges are used to demonstrate how to apply the Code standards in practice. Some learning screens allow the learner to reveal different perspectives on the real-world benefits of key standards, such as student comments on improved emotional wellbeing. This challenges preconceptions and helps learners to understand the multi-layered importance of applying the Code.
