Walkgrove created a comprehensive and practical training programme on financial management for global UN middle managers, including pre- and post-assessment.

The training need

The United Nations Capacity Development and Operational Training Service (UN CDOTS) commissioned Walkgrove to develop an e-learning programme on financial management as part of major reforms taking place within the organisation.

The UN was in the process of decentralisation, including delegating ‘Certifying Authority’ to make financial decisions to mid-level managers who may not have a financial background.

CDOTS wanted to build managers’ understanding and application of their newly delegated authorities. The training course needed to equip these ‘Certifying Officers’ with essential knowledge and skills relevant to resource management in their work.

The course was targeted at time-poor global learners so it needed to be concise and practical.

Our bespoke learning solution

Walkgrove created a four-hour, multi-layered e-learning programme on resource management for Certifying Officers within the United Nations.

After a 10-question pre-assessment to help learners check their current understanding, the bespoke e-learning course is broken into two major sections. The first part introduces foundational concepts and principles of financial management within the UN context, including budgets, accounting and financial controls. The second part of the course offers practical tips and general principles for best practice in key resource management areas, such as travel and goods and services.

Designed to boost knowledge and confidence, the custom e-learning modules are structured into mini-topics that enable short bursts of study. To maximise uptake of information the tutorial screens include mixed media animations and audio, process diagrams and interactive infographics, as well as diverse scenario-based examples and exercises.

Learners have a final opportunity to test their knowledge in a 10-question post-assessment in order to pass the course and receive certification.
