Walkgrove created an immersive and entertaining scenario-based training for truck drivers to encourage best practices for vehicle roadworthiness and safe loading.

The training need

As part of a toolkit for Transport for London (TfL) on Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) roadworthiness and safe transportation of loads, Tetra Tech company WYG commissioned Walkgrove to create a bespoke e-learning module. The course was to be added to the successful Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) suite of advice and training, which supports HGV operators in implementing best practice for safer, greener and smarter driving.

The e-learning needed to act as a standalone course as well as complement a blended learning solution, providing a means of both refreshing and testing information taught in face-to-face training and aligning fully to toolkit safety messages.

TfL wanted a training that would be attention-grabbing and fun, challenging learners to apply what they have learned to safe, real-world situations.

Our bespoke learning solution

Walkgrove developed a 40-minute bespoke e-learning course that immerses learners in a series of simulated situations out on the road as an HGV driver.

The key learning topics of this high-end course include applying practices that ensure safely loaded, roadworthy vehicles, such as walkaround checks, defect reporting and load security. The narrative reinforces the responsibilities of drivers in this area and demonstrates the penalties and risks of not following best practice.

The TruckSmart custom e-learning module follows a ‘day in the life’ of HGV driver Mervyn, and his co-driver Dave, as they start their early shift and check and prepare their truck to ensure it is roadworthy.

Throughout the day, learners are faced with dilemmas and decisions that challenge them to recall and apply what they have learned in the face-to-face training by making decisions on behalf of the drivers.

Using bespoke illustration, 3D graphics and interactive storytelling, the e-learning has a friendly tone designed to engage its audience of HGV operators, including a touch of light-hearted humour.
