Walkgrove created a story-based best practice guide to help lorry drivers make smart decisions about loading and unloading.
The training need
Working on behalf of Transport for London, the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) team at AECOM commissioned Walkgrove to develop an updated version of their e-learning module on parking and loading legally, designed for professional drivers.
The team recognised that professional drivers receive parking penalties and charges for a number of reasons, and wanted to help them identify how to minimise the chance of getting a fine.
The new course needed a refreshed look and feel with a polished and engaging style that mirrored Walkgrove’s other successful FORS module on Cycle Safety. The FORS team also wanted the updated module to feel more relevant to its diverse national audience of drivers, some of whom spoke English as a second language.
Our bespoke learning solution
Walkgrove created a highly interactive bespoke e-learning module for HGV drivers about how to make smart delivery decisions, with a focus on helping them understand the basics of the rules on parking and loading, and encouraging them to adopt good practices.
The 30-minute custom e-learning module is story-driven. Learners spend a day accompanying Don, an HGV driver for fictional company Kwicka, as he goes about making deliveries in an urban environment. Learners are challenged to explore the options for parking and unloading at different delivery locations and make decisions on Don’s behalf throughout the module.
As the day progresses, learners witness the impacts of illegal kerbside loading, understand the scope and application of Parking Charge Notices and Fixed Penalty Notices, and discover how to interpret traffic signs and lines. The course finishes with a quick assessment to check that learners understand the key points.
The course is graphically driven, using detailed 3D animations to create realistic simulated scenes of urban driving and present an immersive story. The story is accompanied by clear and friendly audio narration and handy audio transcripts.
