An adaptation of the NHS Counter Fraud module for all Coal Authority employees
Features
- E-learning
- Story/scenario driven

The training need
The Coal Authority manages the effects of past coal mining as well as the control of coal mining licences.
In support of their Counter Fraud Strategy and looking for a learning solution to build employee awareness and understanding of risks and required actions, they obtained permission from the NHS Counter Fraud Authority to adapt one of the Counter Fraud modules previously developed for the NHS by Walkgrove.
Following review and discussion of the existing module, it was determined that the majority of the screens required updating, with around half the content needing to be customised to meet The Coal Authority’s requirements.
Changes included:
- Branding
- Minor text and name changes
- Redesign of organisation-specific content, such as policies and values, scenarios and assessment questions
- Replacement of and new audio narration and images
Our bespoke learning solution
Working within the footprint of the existing module, enabled a cost-effective yet customised solution to be developed for the Coal Authority, which was reflective of their branding, culture and unique challenges and relatable to their employees.
The module engages learners from the start through the use of practical scenarios and personalised reflective questions. The adjusted scenarios not only bring in typical Coal Authority work situations, but also reflect the challenges of new ways of working, such as hybrid working models.
The solution aims to steadily build learner confidence, understanding and judgment around complex and sensitive information through clear, well-structured and interactive graphic and content presentation combined with regular scenario-based knowledge checks and meaningful feedback.
Audio narration further clarifies information and personalises the learner experience, with learners also having the option to view the audio transcript.
There is a final assessment to determine and sign off successful completion of the module.
The Coal Authority branding is visible throughout the module, and key messages and statements around working together to find and stop fraud are reinforced at regular intervals. Links are provided, where relevant, to related forms and documents for easy reference.
