Walkgrove created a concise, scenario-based e-learning course for university staff about how to address unconscious bias.
The training need
To promote equality and diversity throughout the workforce, Northumbria University commissioned Walkgrove to create a course on unconscious bias.
The course needed to focus on why and how unconscious bias can occur within the
workplace, and ways to challenge it.
The target audience included a diverse mix of approximately 3,500 Northumbria University staff.
Our bespoke learning solution
Walkgrove created a short bespoke e-learning course that gave Northumbria University staff the essential tools to tackle their unconscious biases.
The 25-minute course defines and explains the occurrence of unconscious bias and its impacts, relating the implications to the legislative requirements of the Equality Act 2010. The modules encourage learners to recognise their own unconscious biases, building their skills to challenge initial stereotype-based judgments and prejudices.
As well as clear and simple explanation screens, the custom e-learning design includes a university-specific recruitment scenario. The scenario brings the key learning points to life and demonstrates how unconscious bias can occur within a university setting. At the end of the course, a short test of five questions allows learners to self-assess whether they have achieved the learning outcomes.
