Walkgrove created a self-reflective training course to support the professional development of clinicians working with children and adolescents in mental health services.

The training need

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) were concerned that their existing online course on Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) was outdated and did not track user completion. NES commissioned Walkgrove to create a suite of bespoke e-learning modules that would refresh and update their training on the topic.

NES wanted the course to inspire self-reflection amongst CAMHS clinicians, promoting more effective working.

The course needed to be suitable for learning alone, with a supervisor, or in a group. It had to be flexible and accessible for clinicians to study as part of their changing daily workloads.

Our bespoke learning solution

Walkgrove created five bespoke e-learning modules designed to prompt reflection on clinicians’ personal attitudes, beliefs and work practices and to promote a better understanding of the core values which form the foundation of work within a CAMHS service. Topics include development of children, adolescents and families, family engagement and mental health issues.

By using a clear modular structure, a responsive design and simple bookmarking feature, the custom e-learning design makes it easy for learners to access content from any device and supports clinicians to dip in and out of the learning without losing track of their progress. The e-learning uses a crisp and engaging presentation design. Content is illustrated with positive photography of racially diverse and mixed gender families and conceptual digital graphics.

Instead of formal tested activities and assessments, Walkgrove designed a reflective journal as part of the course. To support the reflective process and provide a professional record of learning, digital workbooks accompany the online modules. Learners can complete the workbooks with their notes, thoughts and learning and have the option to print them or save them electronically.
