The training need
Freshfields needed a bespoke e-learning replacement for a successful classroom course about basic English language skills. All staff are required to take the training as part of their induction, so the learning audience was highly varied in job role, experience, age and gender.
The existing six hours of face-to-face training was well received but no longer cost-effective in meeting the needs of a rapidly expanding staff team. Freshfields wanted an equally high-quality and motivational replacement for classroom training because employees’ professional use of English is essential to the organisation’s credibility.
Our learning solution
Walkgrove designed a one-hour bespoke e-learning solution using an interactive approach to teach the basics of English spelling, punctuation and grammar. The course used imagery, animations, narration and video to teach practical skills through a high-quality learning experience.
The bespoke e-learning solution began with a motivational video introduction and an informal pre-assessment to generate a desire to learn. In each targeted content module, learners were posed with frequent questions and challenging exercises to support ‘learning by doing’ instead of passively reading. This active learning experience was suitable and engaging for a diverse set of learners, from senior heads of function to junior support staff.
The regular inclusion of video clips from an expert tutor helped the learning to feel personal, accessible and friendly, as did audio narration summaries of learning screen. To support learners in applying their learning, Walkgrove created a resource bank of additional hints, tips and aides memoires that learners could return to at any time, or download for their convenience.
