Walkgrove created an e-learning course on wellbeing support for education staff that equips teachers with the skills for self-guided or peer-led reflective practice.

The training need

Education Support (EDS) is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of education staff in schools, colleges and universities.

The Covid-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges for education staff, who were already reporting high levels of work stress. However, only a minority of education professionals have access to formal counselling services.

In response to these factors, EDS asked Walkgrove to develop self-paced e-learning that would support all education staff with their mental health. The e-learning needed to provide information and tools for teachers so they could practise reflective activities.

Our bespoke learning solution

Walkgrove created a clear and practical toolbox for teachers to support their workplace wellbeing through non-judgmental reflection. The bespoke e-learning ‘What’s on your plate? Reflective conversations for education staff’ includes five concise modules that offer guidance on the reflective cycle and how to begin, hold and close a supportive peer conversation or carry out a self-reflective exercise.

As well as tips and tutorials on preparation, questioning and exploration techniques, the custom e-learning facilitates practical application of skills, including realistic examples that show the benefit of (self-)reflection. The look and feel is bright and positive and materials include diagrams and illustrations, explainer animations and talking head guidance videos.

Educators can navigate the course in any order and choose between ‘core’ and ‘bonus’ content, so that they can focus on learning according to their time and needs. The e-learning is fully responsive so that teachers can study the course on their personal devices. The course is available in English, and is also translated into Welsh.

To kick-start the reflective journey, the training includes an exportable learner journal that teachers can use to record their thoughts and plans at key points in the course.

Walkgrove also provisioned our light but powerful learning management platform, Svelte, to enable EDS to launch the course and track uptake and completion rates.

What the client said

“It was an absolute joy working with Walkgrove and we would not hesitate to work with them again for future e-learning projects we may have. They were fully collaborative in their approach, making the whole experience feel like a real partnership. They were always clear on what was expected, timelines and the decisions we needed to make. They were quick to respond to any questions and to talk us through their approach to the development work. We are really pleased with the final course and know that it will be hugely beneficial to staff working in the education sector”.
