Walkgrove created a responsive, scenario-based e-learning module to help staff in policy-making roles use communication tools.
The training need
Dods Training commissioned Walkgrove to develop an online course as part of the Strategic Communications in Policy blended learning programme they developed for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
The learning programme was needed in order to address the challenge of aligning policy-making and communication activities. The FCO wanted to give policy-making staff an understanding of how communications can contribute to delivering foreign policy outcomes.
The e-learning was to serve as a high-level introduction to Dods’ face-to-face workshop and needed to encourage intelligent analysis of communication audiences and opportunities as well as the use of appropriate communication techniques.
The target audience comprises a wide range of global FCO staff who are involved in roles related to policy-making, including policy officers and overseas diplomats of varying experience.
Our bespoke learning solution
Walkgrove created a 45-minute bespoke e-learning course that supported FCO staff through the process of integrating communication into their policy or programme work.
To make the experience immersive and to encourage deep learning, the course uses a ‘test to teachl’ approach. Before receiving any advice or information, learners are asked to apply their existing knowledge and skills to solve a policy issue using communication techniques.
The subsequent modules engage learners in setting objectives, understanding audiences, and responding to the current communication environment. Walkgrove’s custom e-learning design incorporates video contributions from FCO communication experts, bespoke animations and realistic tasks and examples to demonstrate best practice communication techniques and strategy.
Walkgrove’s design empowers learners to take control of their own experience. Modules are fully device responsive (developed in Evolve) and the navigation allows learners to explore topics in any order.
