User-friendly training suitable for older learners

Age UK, the UK’s largest charity working with older people, commissioned Walkgrove to create a user-friendly bespoke e-learning course about welfare benefits advice.
The training need
Age UK intended to expand their small suite of e-learning courses as part of a move to improve access to learning for staff and volunteers. The charity needed to convert a lengthy paper-based training pack on welfare benefits advice and wanted a bespoke learning solution that would be less costly, easier to manage and more convenient to track.
Age UK seeks to give advice to older people in a compassionate and empathetic manner and the custom e-learning needed to reflect Age UK’s warm, positive and supportive approach. The charity also wants all service users to receive helpful information; the e-learning solution needed to enable all Age UK staff and volunteer advisors to deliver clear, succinct and effective information about access to pension-age and other relevant benefits.
Although there are a number of younger Age UK volunteers, the majority of learners were from an older demographic and the e-learning solution needed to be accessible for all and easy to use regardless of technical ability.
Our bespoke learning solution
Walkgrove created an engaging custom e-learning course about the benefits system, working-age benefits, pension benefits and disability benefits. To reflect Age UK’s brand approach, the tone of voice was friendly, engaging and informal throughout, with light-touch ‘knowledge checks’ rather than formal assessment. The use of high-quality human-centric photography and bright and positive graphic design reinforced this warm and supportive look and feel.
To ensure ease of use by everyone, there was minimal complexity in the learning design and navigation was simple and unrestrictive. Although the four modules represented two and a half hours of learning time in total, they were designed to be consumed in bite-size chunks so that staff and volunteers could fit their training around other tasks as necessary.
Age UK were impressed with the solution and subsequently commissioned Walkgrove to develop further training on Social Care.
